Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)

Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) is designed to develop and train prospective Army officers. College students take ROTC classes and participate in related activities along with their normal college degree program, becoming an officer cadet and learning valuable leadership skills that are well-suited for either a military or civilian job.

Following graduation and successful completion of the ROTC program, cadets are offered a commission as a second lieutenant. As an Army officer, one learns the necessary skills to lead American soldiers in numerous assignments around the world. The ROTC program consists of an elective class, supplementary lab and morning physical training, which fully develop students into future Army officers. The program also includes other activities and opportunities for personal development in all relevant areas – scholastic, physical or military.

SIMULTANEOUS MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM (SMP)

The SMP gives eligible enlisted members of the ARNG an opportunity to maintain status in the National Guard while simultaneously attending college and participating as a contracted Cadet in the ROTC Program working towards a Commission as an Officer. The SMP offers on-the-job training, reinforces the role of the Commissioned Officer in the Army, and gives ROTC Cadets the experience of working with Soldiers and Noncommissioned Officers in a Reserve Component Unit. All GRFD Cadets must participate in the SMP.

ROTC Cadets participating in the SMP will attend one weekend training event each month as well as a two-week annual training with their Reserve Component Unit. SMP Cadets may also take advantage of any Education incentives offered by the National Guard including, but not limited to, State Tuition Waiver, Selected Reserve-Montgomery GI Bill, and/or Student Loan Repayment Program.
